At The Store

These are my favourite items here, and MAN am I crazy about them. Lets begin with my absolute favourite, made in Bizerte:
Hazelnut Butter....its like a sugar free Ferrero Roche in the form of caramel. I could sit and eat it spoon after spoon. Hidden on the shelf in the bakers section, I overlooked this product for 9 years. One day I decided to give it a try, and now I always have one in the fridge. I eat 3 spoons a day, and I HAVE to stop myself from having more.... DELISH!

Harissa is a genuine absolute in any home, and once you start enjoying food with harissa its hard not to keep it on hand. Its not even a question about it, every home is stocked up on harissa.

Shemia, aka - halva. I find the regular shemia too sweet so I buy the sugar free variation which has malitol and is still very very sweet, but oh so delicious. Another addiction! A nightly habit I keep trying to break. A must have in my house too.

Pastries: The patries in Tunisia are quite unique and absolute artistry. They are usually not very sweet and a mix of nuts, dates, syrup or honey and seeds. Due to the syrup and honey they last long, (not when Im around) but great to keep with you to go with a cup of tea. There are pastry shops everywhere! My current favourite is Madame Hachicha, and I believe she has stores in several cities around the country.

Dates are so common here I almost forgot to write about them. They are so delicious and nutritious its an obvious must have. Tunisians usually have them very fresh from the south from a friend who has just returned from a trip.

Olive Oil: Again, another product so common here I almost forget to mention it. Tunisian olive oil is voted year after year as the best in the world, and yet it is still a country not famous for olive oil from Westerners. The Olive Oil is incredible and very cheap compared to other countries, so when here stock up.

Items like black seed, black seed oil, argan oil, which are miracle cures are available almost everywhere here. Again so common they are overlooked. You can find them in pure form, oils, soaps, seeds, creams.... stock up when here or keep them in your home and use them daily.

Sugar wax: For girls this is a great product. Its hard to find a wax that works at home like the spa, but in Tunisia they are experts on sugar wax. For a dollar or 2 you can stock up for a year on sugar wax that doesnt require strips or sticks for waxing, heat, mold between your fingers and wax. The wax washes off easily with water, and voila - easy, peasy.

A Tunisian item you must seek out is called: Zrir. Its now available in most pastry shops. Its a traditional recipe made for nursing mothers, given to visitors after the baby is born. Its a paste which is made of blended nuts, honey, seeds and olive oil. Its one of the most delicious things Ive ever tasted. I always look forward to visiting a new mom to see the baby and get a taste of the super yummy zrir.

If you are interested in a Tunisian package featuring these items Im happy to collect a beautifuk array for you and ship them.
